Posted October 2, 2024Oct 2 Hi, A customer is using a Citrix RDS farm to provide specificthe apps to a group of users. We are now deploying a horizon enviroment on this customer and we will have to replace the Citrix application server farm. As far as I know I can deploy a RDS farm with windows servers (like in citrix) but also I have the option of deploy a Win11 farm. In the first scenario many users will be able to log into a single RDS server that will provide the application to each user. However in the second scenario, each user will have a win 11 that will provide its aplications. In first scenario it is requested to have RDS CALs for the users because they will use win server, but in case the farm is based on windows 11, is it also requested to have some type of RDS cal? thanks
October 8, 2024Oct 8 Hi there, Generally when using a Client OS you can gain economic benefits of its licensing model. So scenario 2 using Win 11 with published Apps will help you saving MS livenses as long as you don't have to much Computing/ OS overhead because of the fact that only one user can connect to a machine at the same time.
October 9, 2024Oct 9 There is no RDS licensing model for the Windows Desktop operating system. The desktop model previously required either Microsoft Software Assurance or VDA licensing. So saving on licensing costs by using Windows 11? I wouldn't be so sure. Please consult a Microsoft licensing expert for this, as this tends to change over time and can be hard to find out for your specific situation. October 10, 2024Oct 10 The following Microsoft 365 plans include Windows 11 virtualization rights, which means the user can access a Windows 11 virtual desktop: Microsoft 365 Business Premium (requires activated Windows Pro or Enterprise on the client), Microsoft 365 E3 (includes VDA), and Microsoft 365 E5 (includes VDA). Only VDA allows users access from any client device (Thin Client, Mac OS, Chromebook, Linux, Windows 10/11). IMPORTANT: Microsoft 365 is NOT Office 365!!!! But typically Office 365 is included in Microsoft 365. Many enterprises and public administrations have a Microsoft 365 plan for their users.
