How to properly upgrade DEM?

Recommended Posts

Hi

In an horizon farm I have to upgrade an old DEM standard license version 2106 to the new DEM standard 2406 version. What would be the recommended steps?

As far as I know:

  1. turn off the DEM console machine and do a snapshot
  2. do also a backup or snapshot of the machine with the shared folder configs
  3. turn on the DEM console machine and launch the MSI to upgrade the product
  4. after the upgrade of the DEM console deploy the new DEM ADMX on the domain controller
  5. upgrade the DEM agent (flex engine) on the gold image
  6. build a test instant clone pool with the updated golden image and check if everything is ok
  7. In case any issue is not fixed we can revert the snapshot of the DEM console and the shared configs folder

Are the previous steps correct?

is there anything I must do with the license file?

Thanks

Hello
First of all you can't upgrade from 2106 directly to 2406
https://interopmatrix.omnissa.com/Upgrade?productId=512&isHidePatch=true&isHideLegacyReleases=false

you need to upgrade with two steps first go to 2312 and after go to 2406

The DEM upgrade as you indicated is made up of various parts.

Some suggestions:
- Before upgrading the agents of the EUC solution (in this case DEM) check this KB which explains some precautions to use

Agent installation order for Horizon View, Dynamic Environment Manager, and App Volumes (2118048)

- The suggested order of the Omnissa EUC components upgrade is indicated in this KB

Update sequence for Horizon 7, Horizon 8, and compatible Omnissa products (78445)

Returning to DEM, the main point is the FlexEngine agent, this validates the upgrade.

So I normally proceed in this sequence.

- Install DEM agent on Master Image and validate operation on a test Desktop Pool
- Install DEM Console (if you want to make a backup it's fine but it's just a console)
- Copy of ADMX central store files of Active Directory

For the license as indicated on this page
Upgrade FlexEngine on all Windows Desktops and Terminal Servers

"Note: When upgrading to Dynamic Environment Manager 2203 and later, a previously provided license file remains valid. Any future updates to the license must be performed using the Management Console. For more information, see Managing Licenses in the Omnissa Dynamic Environment Manager Administration guide at Omnissa Product Documentation."

Many thanks for the info...

I have also to upgrade the Horizon from 2106 to 2406 and I check on the interoperability matrix that it can be directly upgraded so I wrongly assumed that DEM was the same.

So as far as I understand from your explanations, the update process I will have to do is this:

  1. upgrade the DEM agent with 2406 (flex engine) on the gold/master image
  2. turn off the DEM console machine and do a snapshot (optional)
  3. do also a backup or snapshot of the machine with the shared folder configs  (optional)
  4. turn on the DEM console machine and launch the MSI to upgrade the product from 2106 --> 2312
  5. then upgrade again the DEM console machine from 2312 --> 2406
  6. after the upgrade of the DEM console deploy the new DEM ADMX (2406) on the domain controller
  7. build a test instant clone pool with the updated golden image and check if everything is OK
  8. In case any issue is not fixed we can revert the snapshot of the DEM console and the shared configs folder

Is the previous correct?

In case of the need of rollingback, would it be correct to revert the snapshots of the DEM console machine and the shared folders that contains the configs?

Regarding FlexEngine agent on the existent desktop pools...The customer will use a test pool with the new 2406 DEM agent installed. But what happens with the old pools with the 2106 agent on them? Could they work after the DEM console upgrade?

This looks correct. Backup of the DEM file share is the most important for restore/rollback. A simple copy/paste of the file share content to a backup folder or safe location is sufficient. For DEM Management Console rollback, you can simply re-install the previous version (MSI) or revert back to a saved snapshot.

Yes, including the previous image/pool with the previous DEM version.

Yes they could, as long as you don't make any changes in the (new) DEM Management Console. I would suggest you make sure that nobody makes any changes until you have tested the new version. Again, having a copy of the full DEM file share always gives you the opportunity to rollback (!).
