Horizon Apps on Demand: A Detailed Briefing

Based on the provided source material, this briefing document reviews the key themes and takeaways regarding VMware's Horizon Apps on Demand solution.

Core Problem: Traditional application delivery methods are struggling to keep pace with the demands of today's dynamic work environments. This leads to:

  • Complexity in Application Management: Packaging, image management, and deployment processes are cumbersome and resource-intensive.
  • Rising User Expectations: Users demand instant and seamless access to applications, regardless of location or device.
  • Scaling Challenges: A logistical hurdle is providing suitable applications to the right users at scale.

Solution: Horizon Apps on Demand

This solution fundamentally changes how applications are provisioned and managed, offering a dynamic and streamlined approach.

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Instant, Dynamic Delivery: "Apps on Demand allow applications to be delivered in real-time, only when a user initiates access." This eliminates pre-installation, reduces image management overhead, and improves login times.
  • Optimized Resource Management: Dynamic provisioning avoids a "one-size-fits-all" model, reducing storage and processing demands and improving overall virtual environment performance.
  • Simplified App Management: Centralized packaging and updates eliminate the need for constant image rebuilding, streamlining application lifecycle management.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Instant application access provides a streamlined experience with faster login times, which is crucial for industries needing quick, reliable access to tools.
  • Reduced IT Overhead: Automation and simplified management allow IT teams to focus on strategic initiatives instead of routine tasks.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: The solution supports various applications and user scenarios, adapting to organizational growth and changing needs.
  • Enhanced Security: On-demand delivery reduces exposure to vulnerabilities from outdated software, and IT retains control over application availability.

Target Audience:

Horizon Apps on Demand is ideal for organizations struggling with:

  • Complex application delivery processes
  • Meeting user demands for instant application access
  • Scaling application delivery efficiently
  • High IT overhead for application management

Industries that can particularly benefit:

  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Finance
  • Retail

Call to Action:

Explore how Horizon Apps on Demand can simplify your application delivery, improve user experience, and drive organizational efficiency.

Why is this still called VMWare Horizon apps ? I thought it was Omnissa now 😉
Also wondering when will appstacks come to workstations because that would be a real game changer with Appv EOL and MSIX not mature yet.

AppVolumes for (physical) workstations would also be realy bennefitial for us.
Would be nice to have at least a global timeline for this.

It is available since a long time!

https://docs.omnissa.com/bundle/AppVolumesInstallGuideV2306/page/IntroductiontoAppVolumes.html

Target Computer A VDI desktop, physical client computer, Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Host or Citrix XenApp Server where users log in to access their applications delivered from the Package. The target computer must have the App Volumes agent installed and configured to connect to the App Volumes Manager.

But take Care!

"Yes. App Volumes 2.9 and later support delivering AppStacks and writable volumes to physical machines under the following conditions: • A constant network connection must be available. • Automatic Windows updates must be disabled. • The operating system on the physical endpoint must be nonpersistent, streamed, or both. (IE Citrix PVS) • Updates to the operating system cannot be performed with AppStacks or writable volumes attached"

I think with latest releases it possible also on persistent devices

Release Notes of 2406

What’s New

  • Persistent Desktop Support

    • Expanded Use Cases: New support for classic Windows desktop environments, a significant enhancement to our Apps Everywhere strategy. This new feature extends our efficient one-to-many provisioning model, previously available only for non-persistent desktops, to persistent virtual desktop environments.

I have not tested yet
